Here are the inks to the cover of issue 2 of Metal Gods. I initially planned on putting Nick and Lou up against a ratty old barn; in my head, the final image would have been the same, but rather than an open background I would have had far more texture and whatnot going on. While I was thinking about this, I started mucking around with the idea of using a flat colour to fill that background space and push out the main characters even more. I liked the idea so much that I decided to do exactly that.
Somewhat coincidentally, it also dawned on me that a lot of my favourite comics from the past have used exactly this technique. Alpha Flight 4 is a good example.
